The Salvation Army said today that with temperatures dipping below freezing at night and the Community Kitchen at capacity, it will open its overnight emergency shelter for the homeless starting at 6 p.m. today and continuing through Saturday and into next week.

Spokeswoman Kimberly George said in a new release the shelter at 800 McCallie Ave. is in need of financial support and volunteers to help shelter and feed up to 50 homeless people.

"Our goal is to partner with other agencies to keep people safe and warm with these low temperatures setting in," Maj. Robert Lyle, Chattanooga Salvation Army Area commander, said in the release. "We need monetary donations since shelter is not budgeted and need coffee, creamer and travel-size toiletry items for the shelter. Also, our supply of new heaters for low-income home owners has been depleted."
