A 27-year-old man faces multiple charges after a woman told police he choked, hit and raped her in her home.

Officers responded to the Jackson Street home around 10 a.m. Sunday on a report of an assault and found the victim bleeding from her face, according to court documents.

The woman told investigators she met the suspect, Edward Garrett, on Facebook and began speaking with him then. He came over for dinner two days earlier and slept at her home. When she left for work the next day, she told him to lock the door behind him when he left, but he was still on her couch when she came home.

She told him he needed to leave, but he grabbed her by the throat and started choking her, telling her not to disrespect him, according to the police report. The woman told police Garrett dragged her by her hair and shoulders into the bathroom and continued choking her while swearing at her. The victim said Garrett forced her to perform oral sex on him.

She passed out five times over the course of the night because Garrett was choking her, she told police. He then dragged her into another room and had sex with her at least a dozen times, the woman told police. She said he also took pictures and video.

Eventually, she told police, Garrett grabbed a knife and held it to her throat saying, "Please don't make me kill you," "Please don't make me bury you" and "Please don't make me kill your kid." He then grabbed bleach from the laundry room, put a spray nozzle on it and started spraying everything he had touched and everywhere he had taken her.

Her head was still bleeding, so she asked him if she could clean up, she said. He said yes and she managed to sneak her cellphone into the bathroom. She called the last number on her phone, telling them to contact police, and officers showed up shortly after, prompting Garrett to run out the back door.

Garrett was found walking through a field nearby toward Cleveland Avenue. Police tried to detain him on North Hawthorne Street, but he was uncooperative so officers took him into custody. The victim later identified him as the man who assaulted her overnight.

Garrett denied doing anything to the victim and said they had oral sex, but nothing more, according to police. He told police he was asleep for most of the night and when he woke up he saw the victim had a cut over her eye, but he didn't know what it was from.

Garrett is charged with aggravated rape, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in court before General Sessions Judge Clarence Shattuck on July 10.
