Volkswagen of America today reported a 5.7 jump in June sales with the new Tiguan sport utility vehicle and all-new Jetta compact sedan helping to push the figures higher.

For the first half of 2018, VW sales are 7.2 percent above the same period last year, according to the German automaker.

June sales totaled 28,941 units, with the Tiguan SUV accounting for 7,788 vehicles sold, the company reported.

Jetta sales totaled 7,239. The new 2019 Jetta accounted for 5,168 units, VW said.

Sales of the Chattanooga-built Atlas SUV totaled 3,699 vehicles in the month, up 53.3 percent from a year ago.

The Passat midsize sedan, also made in Chattanooga, posted sales of 3,793 in June, down 28 percent from the same month last year.

"The first half of 2018 has been encouraging," said Derrick Hatami, executive vice president of sales, marketing and after sales for Volkswagen of America. "We have experienced a sales increase each month this year-and in June, we were particularly encouraged by the first full month of sales of the all-new 2019 Jetta, marking our best month of Jetta sales this year."
