'Backdoor plan' puts local 'Big Brother' contestant Shafaat on defensive

It was a difficult week for former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football player Faysal Shafaat on the CBS reality show "Big Brother."

Shafaat watched as one of his closest allies, Chris "Swaggy C" Williams, was evicted Thursday by an 8-4 vote. Equally as tough for Shafaat to swallow was that the eviction came under the Head of Household reign of Kaitlyn Herman, a houseguest in whom Shafaat put his trust.

"Big Brother" follows a group of people living in a house under constant surveillance with someone being voted out each week.

Despite warning signs that Herman was flipping sides last week, Shafaat felt good about Herman winning Head of Household. Herman told Shafaat that her target for the week was Winston Hines, but Hines was a pawn in the plan to force Williams out.

Williams was not initially nominated for eviction Sunday, but was chosen as a replacement nominee after the Power of Veto ceremony Wednesday. In Big Brother, the strategy of not nominating the initial target to throw other houseguests off is known as a backdoor plan.

"I'm just real confused at this point, because Kaitlyn is supposed to be my best friend in this house and she has this massive plan behind my back," Shafaat said after the veto ceremony.

Wednesday's episode featured clips of Herman lying to Shafaat about the plan and diary room sessions with Herman in tears because she considers Shafaat "one of the best friends I've ever had."

"It's really not easy for me to look at him (Shafaat) in the face and lie," Herman said. "If anything, he's the one person I should be telling and keeping in the circle."

Shafaat moves forward needing the balance of power to shift for him to make a deep run. Scottie Salton became the new Head of Household at the end of Thursday's episode. Salton has been working with Shafaat so far this season, but with Shafaat assessing "my alliance has officially blown up" earlier in Thursday's episode, nothing is guaranteed.
