Bank robbery report causes rush-hour blockage downtown

A call of a robbery in progress at a downtown Chattanooga bank caused police to block off Market Street at the tail end of rush hour Wednesday afternoon.

Police cars and SUVs blocked access to the 600 block and provided cover for watchful law officers in front of the Regions Bank. They pulled away and let traffic start moving again shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Chattanooga police spokeswoman Elisa Myzal said the robbery in progress call was changed to suspicious activity.

An officer outside the bank, who didn't give his name, said someone in the building apparently saw something that made him or her fear a robbery, but it turned out not to be the case.
