Two Georgia men sentenced to life in prison for 2015 slaying

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Two Georgia men found guilty in the 2015 slaying of a man have each been sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison.

The Savannah Morning News reports 20-year-old Dreshaun Jabree Martin and 26-year-old Tori Laselle Byrd were sentenced Monday.

Both men were convicted May 24 of murder and aggravated assault by a Chatham County Superior Court jury in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Valantine Dwight Gant. The same bullet that killed Gant wounded his 3-year-old son.

Assistant District Attorney Nancy Grey Smith said Gant was set up to be beaten during a marijuana deal. A gun the men brought went off while Gant was wrestling over it.

Defense attorneys Richard Darden and Martin Hilliard had asked Bass to make the 20-year terms concurrent with the mandatory life ones.
