Walker County deputies under criminal investigation for allegedly assaulting woman

Two Walker County, Ga., sheriff's deputies are under criminal investigation for allegedly assaulting a woman.

Sheriff Steve Wilson said the two off-duty deputies were in a Fort Oglethorpe apartment with the woman on Saturday night. He said the woman left the apartment and accused the deputies of trying to hold her against her will and have sex with her.

He said Fort Oglethorpe detectives began investigating hours after the alleged attack and asked for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's help.

Wilson said he learned about the allegation Sunday morning and put the deputies on administrative leave with pay. He did not know what specific charges investigators are looking at. He declined to name the deputies.

Fort Oglethorpe Police Chief Mike Helton did not immediately return a call seeking comment this afternoon. GBI Director of Public Affairs Nelly Miles told the Times Free Press in an email, "At this point, we are not in a position to release specifics due to the ongoing investigation."

Wilson said that one of the deputies had a consensual relationship with the accuser. The two then went to the other deputy's apartment.

"That's where it kind of went haywire," Wilson said.
