A shooting incident on West 13th Street Court that sent one woman to the hospital and another to jail on Tuesday night escalated from a verbal argument over an 8-year-old girl, according to the victim.

Briana Smith, 23, told investigators she and Clinnita Chambliss, 33, started fighting over how Chambliss spoke to the victim's daughter, according to court documents. Allegedly, Chambliss began choking Smith, but another woman jumped in and the fight ended.

Chambliss then walked into a home, returned with a handgun and fired several rounds, striking Smith in the leg. Smith managed to get inside her own home, but Chambliss shot multiple rounds at the door while yelling, "Come back out."

Smith told police four children were inside the home when shots were fired and an investigator noted two bullet impact marks in the storm door.

Chambliss told police she went inside to get a gun because she thought Smith and the other woman were still coming. She also said she fired a "warning shot" at Smith before shooting several more rounds.

Chambliss has been charged with aggravated assault, attempted first- degree murder and felony reckless endangerment. Anyone with further information about the incident is asked to call police at 423-698-2525.
