Bi-Lo, Winn-Dixie parent filing for bankruptcy

Southeastern Grocers, the parent of the Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery chains, is closing 94 stores and plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

None of the stores which Southeastern Grocers announced are closing are located in the Chattanooga area. In 2015, Abingdon, Va.-based Food City purchased 29 Bi-Lo supermarkets in the Chattanooga market and rebranded them as Food City stores.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Southeastern Grocers said that 582 stores will continue to operate as usual during its restructuring. According to the company, the restructuring will decrease overall debt levels by over $500 million.

Southeastern Grocers operates stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina under the Winn-Dixie, Bi-Lo, Harveys Supermarket and Fresco y Más banners.
