Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Martin announced Monday he is seeking to keep the District 3 seat.

Martin was elected to an unexpired term on the commission in November 2016. He will face Democrat Rosabelle Gorman in the August county general election.

"Listening to the people of the community I was raised in is important to me," Martin said in a news release. Before joining the commission, he served on the Hamilton County Board of Education for District 3 and was named Tennessee PTA School Board Member of the Year in 2015.

"The people of Hixson, Middle Valley and Lakesite want a government that is transparent, accountable, and responsive to their needs," Martin said.

"The people want a government that works for them and their best interest. Families want an education system that is accountable to parents and partners with local business leaders to provide a first-class education for our young people. Our first responders need to have all of the tools and training to do their jobs and keep our schools and community safe."

Martin managed a network of cemeteries for more than 20 years and is a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Realty Center in Hixson.

He said private businesses risking capital and investing in communities are what drives the local economy.

"We must continue to have policies that make Hamilton County the preferred choice for new and expanding businesses. Our unemployment rate is lower than the national and state levels because of leaders working together to move our community forward," he said.

Martin is the son of Dianne Killough Martin and the late John Martin, both of Hixson. He graduated from Hixson High and Bryan College. His wife, Sheila, is a teacher in Hamilton County Schools.

Greg Martin is a member of the Hixson Kiwanis Club and the Friends of Hixson and serves on the advisory board of the North River Civic Center. He is a former board member of the Hixson Council of the Chamber of Commerce and a former leadership mentor at Hixson High School.
