A cold snap that will send overnight temperatures plunging has caused the Salvation Army in Chattanooga to open a cold-weather shelter for tonight.

Spokeswoman Kimberly George said in a news release that its day center for the homeless, the ReCreate Café, will open at 6 p.m. for overnight shelter.

The Salvation Army is seeking donations of blankets and coats for the shelter resident, as well as money donations.

"It costs approximately $300 to operate overnight shelter," said Maj. Major Mark Smith, area commander. "We don't budget for this and rely on the communities support."
