A plan to put one of the biggest-ever apartment and commercial projects near downtown's riverfront won approval from a Chattanooga zoning panel today.

Travis Todd of Thomas and Hutton Engineering Co. said a rezoning request was OK'ed by the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission. His company had sought rezoning on a Unum parking lot bounded by Cherry, Walnut, Third and Fourth streets to put up a parking garage for the proposed project.

Todd said plans are to seek final zoning approval from the city council on Nov. 13.

The Beach Company of Charleston, South Carolina, wants to build 151 apartments and a dozen townhouses, along with 16,000 square feet of office and retail space, on two adjacent Unum parking lots.

A smaller lot across Cherry Street and behind the Hair of the Dog pub is adjacent to the larger lot.

A 300-space parking garage will be constructed in the center of the big lot for the new development, which will have three-, four- and five-story buildings, according to The Beach Company.
