Human remains found in North Georgia woods

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said hunters found a skeleton in the woods in the High Point Community this afternoon.

The bones lay next to a tree, about 200 yards from Highway 193. Wilson said the unidentified man probably killed himself. The hunters found a rope on the tree, tied together in a noose.

Wilson said the coroner will drive the remains to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab Wednesday morning. They hope to identify the body based on dental records.

"The remains were remarkably still intact," Wilson said.

Though they will await identification, investigators believe they know who the person was. Wilson said evidence from the woods leads them to think the skeleton is that of a man who was reported missing in early June.

The High Point Community is about 5 miles south of Flintstone.
