TBI probing discovery of skeletal remains in Polk County

The TBI and Polk County authorities are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains found Monday in a remote area of the Cherokee National Forest east of Benton, Tennessee.

The remains were found by hunters, TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland said in a statement issued Tuesday.

Niland said 10th Judicial District Attorney's Office and a team from the University of Tennessee Anthropology Center in Knoxville are working jointly with local officials at the site near Oswald Road on Benton Mountain. The area is also known as Chilhowee Mountain and Bean Mountain.

The investigation is ongoing. Niland said the Cleveland Police Department and Bradley County Sheriff's Office are also participating in the investigation.
