Volkswagen's Passat midsize sedan has hit the 30 million vehicle production mark and is the best-selling model ever in its segment worldwide, according to the German automaker.

The Passat, which is assembled in Chattanooga for the North American market, was first produced in 1973 in Wolfsburg, Germany, the automaker said.

The 30 millionth Passat, a plug-in hybrid, came off an assembly line in Emden, Germany. It will be used as a press and test vehicle for international media over the coming months.

In the U.S., sales of the Passat have fallen in recent years as motorists turn more to buying SUVs and trucks. In the first quarter of this year, Volkswagen of America reported that sales were down 21 percent from the same period in 2018 to 7,758 vehicles.
