Chattanooga police seeking community's help to identify sexual assault suspect

ORIGINAL STORY: The Chattanooga Police Department is looking for a man believed to be involved in two separate assaults on women in the past week in the Oak Grove area, department communications coordinator Elisa Myzal said in an email.

The first incident occurred between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. on April 23, and a woman who was shot by the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The second incident occurred in the same time period on Monday, when a woman told police she was sexually assaulted by a man whose description was similar to that of the suspect in the first assault.

Police are seeking a light-skinned black man with dreadlocks and tattoos on his arms, chest and stomach. He is thought to be in his 20s or early 30s, is about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs more than 200 pounds.

The Chattanooga Police Department's Special Victims and Major Crimes Units are investigating the incidents.

Police ask that anyone with information about either incident or who may have seen someone matching that description call 423-698-2525 or submit a tip using the department's mobile app, Chattanooga PD Mobile, on an iPhone or Android phone.

Police tips on how to stay safe while walking after dark:

Avoid walking or running alone at night. Do not use headphones. Walk in well-lighted areas. Avoid using short cuts and alleyways. Avoid walking near large bushes where someone could be hiding. Pay attention to your surroundings . Do not walk while looking at your phone screen. Do not display cash openly. If you feel that you're being followed, immediately call 911 and try to get to an area with more people and lights.
