State and local authorities are investigating the discovery Monday of human remains behind an Etowah, Tennessee, grocery store.

The body was found behind the Piggly Wiggly on Tennessee Avenue by a person who reported it to McMinn County 911 dispatchers, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Niland said in a news release.

She said it has not been identified.

"An autopsy is expected to be performed later this week," Niland said. She was unable to say whether the body was linked to any known missing persons.

"We don't have any missing persons cases that would be related to it," McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said Tuesday. The investigation into the body's discovery has not been linked to any other county investigations either, the sheriff said.

The TBI joined the investigation at the request of 10th District Attorney General Stephen Crump.

The store is located in the 700 block of Tennessee Avenue in downtown Etowah in a mostly commercial area near the intersection of U.S. Highway 411 and State Route 30.

Etowah police chief Eric Armstrong deferred all questions to the TBI.

Anyone with information about the discovery is urged to call 1-800-TBI-FIND or local law enforcement.
