A teenager was taken to Erlanger Medical Center with first and second degree burns after a group of juvenile family members playing with a lighter apparently started a fire, according to a release from Chattanooga Fire Department Battalion Chief Don Bowman.

The 16-year-old was at home with family when their Lilliian Lane house caught fire shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Several fire department units responded and extinguished the fire less than 30 minutes later. However, the home was heavily burnt.

The rest of the family, four adults and five children, safely evacuated.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family. The fire remains under investigation but appears to have been started by children playing with a lighter, according to the release.
