MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- A judge has rejected a plea deal for a man accused of severely beating another man for flirting with him and then bragging about the attack online.
The Daily News Journal reports Judge Royce Taylor on Thursday rejected a deal for 25-year-old Brandon Wiley that included a three-year prison sentence. Taylor said the sentencing wasn't sufficient and noted that the victim requested Wiley get an eight-year sentence.
The victim has told authorities he and Wiley were drinking together at a Murfreesboro bar last summer when he offered to pay Wiley to remove his shirt. That's when Wiley beat him into unconsciousness. Prosecutors say the victim didn't want the attack to be considered a hate crime in an effort to limit case publicity. A hearing is set for next month.
