MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A 20-year-old Tennessee man has been charged with criminally negligent homicide in the fatal shooting of a child, Memphis police confirm.

Officials with the Memphis fire department told news outlets the victim was a 4-year-old boy. Officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Sunday night where they found the male child suffering from a gunshot wound, Memphis police said on Twitter. The boy was transported to a hospital in "extremely critical" condition where he died from his injuries, the police statement said.

Investigators arrested and charged Alex Brown in the shooting. The cause is still being investigated, police said. Police didn't say how Brown knew the child.
