LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Police in Georgia say a man they initially thought died of natural causes actually died from stab wounds to his neck.

News outlets report Gwinnett County police are now investigating the death of 61-year-old Ray Neal as a homicide.

Neal's sister, Michelle Smalls, found his body on the floor of his bedroom, where blood was on the walls.

Police Cpl. Michele Pihera says the scene seemed suspicious, but police weren't sure if the blood was related to Neal's medical conditions or a crime.

The initial medical investigator's report said Neal died from natural causes. But Pihera says a funeral home employee noticed suspicious injuries to Neal's neck, so an autopsy was performed Monday and the medical examiner ultimately determined the death to be a homicide.
