A Jasper man drowned Monday night at Bennett Lake access area off R.A. Griffith Highway in Marion County, Tennessee.

The man, 48-year-old Lamar Graham, was backing a boat into the water around 11 p.m. with a friend, according to a release from Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency spokeswoman Mime Barnes. The drain plug was not in the boat and it began to take on water.

Graham went into the lake to reload the boat onto the trailer, but it had slipped into seven-to-eight feet of water, according to the release. He tried to swim to the boat but lost consciousness. The friend brought Graham to shore, and CPR was performed.

Marion County wildlife officers responded to the scene with TWRA wildlife officers, the Marion County Sheriff's Office and EMS. Graham was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
