Repair work on the interstate bridge at exit 239 on Interstate 59 in DeKalb County, Alabama, began today, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

ALDOT officials said in a news release that the bridge was damaged in a May 29 crash and a $628,200 repair contract was recently awarded to Wright Brothers Construction.

I-59 southbound is currently reduced to one lane, officials said. Following the crash, ALDOT installed concrete barriers to protect damaged bridge columns so that traffic could be safely restored to the inside southbound lane while repairs take place.

The outside southbound lane of I-59 and CR-140 in both directions at the overpass will remain closed until repairs are complete, officials said.

Officials expect repairs to be completed sometime in July.
