Former Chattanooga city councilman Chris Anderson and his boyfriend Gabriel Chambers were both arrested Thursday night and charged with domestic assault after an argument turned physical.

Police were called to a home in the 1600 block of Madison Street just before 11 p.m., according to Hamilton County Court records.

Anderson told police he was watching TV with Chambers when he "used a slang term" that Chambers didn't like, court records state. The two began arguing, and at one point, Chambers "jumped on top of [Anderson] and started hitting him in the face."

Police then spoke to Chambers, who agreed that the argument started over Anderson's use of the slang term. But he said that Anderson was the one who jumped on top of him and started choking and hitting him, and he only hit Anderson back in self-defense, court records state.

Without knowing who was the primary aggressor, police arrested both Anderson and Chambers, "since both parties had visible marks."

Their bonds were both set at $500.
