Fire crews in Walker County battled an early morning blaze at the Chickamauga landfill.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday, material that had been brought to the landfill, located off North Marble Top Road, on Tuesday flared up in the construction and demolition section, where building waste such as lumber, glass and brick is disposed, according to a news release.

Firefighters with Walker County Fire Rescue used about 35,000 gallons of water to contain the blaze, which covered about a fourth of an acre, the release states. Landfill and Public Works crews also smothered the area with dirt to further combat hot spots.

Crews will continue to monitor this area in case the fire rekindles, the release states. A cause remains undetermined.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been advised and is monitoring the situation.
