BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police in Alabama say a child who was shot in an apparent accident has suffered life-threatening injuries.

Birmingham police tell news outlets that the 10-year-old boy was shot Sunday night in the Ensley neighborhood. Police spokesman Officer Rod Mauldin says it is unclear who fired the gunshot, but it appears to have been accidental.

Police say officers had found the boy on the porch of a home they were dispatched to. Firefighters and medics transported him to a hospital.

Authorities are still investigating.
