"I requested the TBI to investigate some allegations of improper sexual contact between an officer and a female inmate who was on a work crew," Taylor said in a phone interview.

Taylor said he learned of the allegations seven to 10 days ago and met with agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation last week en route to requesting a probe.

TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland said officials with the state agency "are limited as to the information we are able to provide at this stage."

Niland deferred to Taylor for any details.

"The person of interest is the person who takes the inmates out to do trash pickup and things like that," Taylor said. The officer involved is male and the alleged incident happened away from the sheriff's office, he said.

Taylor said the state-led investigation is ongoing and that he could not comment further.
