Johns Mountain Overlook Road in Walker County, Georgia is indefinitely closed due to vandalism, the U.S. Forest Service announced Friday.
Vandals spray painted numerous images on the observation tower and surrounding area including a pentagram, anti-police message and phallic symbol. The post noted other images were too graphic to share.
"When senseless damage like this vandalism and destruction of public facilities occurs, it takes away from our capacity to make progress addressing other critical maintenance needs," the U.S. Forest Service posted to its Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests page.
The forest service is asking the public to find other locations to view fall foliage until repairs can be made.
The steep gravel road leads from Pocket Road up Johns Mountain to an observation deck. There's a small gravel parking area near the deck and a 3.5-mile hiking loop.
