A student was arrested at Hixson High School Wednesday after being found in possession of a loaded handgun.

A school resource officer or administrator received information from a student that another student might be in possession of a handgun and a search was conducted, according to Hamilton County Schools spokesperson Tim Hensley.

The weapon was discovered shortly after the search began. The school was never on lockdown and there was no disruption to the school day because of the isolation of the search, Hensley said.

The student was arrested and transported to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center and was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds, according to a press release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

The Hixson High student was one of two students arrested in Hamilton County Wednesday.

A student at Brainerd High School was also arrested and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds Wednesday after a random search turned found the student to be in possession of an unloaded handgun.

Wednesday's incident was the second time a student has been arrested at Hixson High this school year. Last month, a student was arrested after a school resource officer received a tip.

Since both students arrested Wednesday are juveniles, no further details were provided by the sheriff's office.

This is at least the sixth case in 2019 overall involving a student being found with a handgun at school in Hamilton County.

Last month, a student at Washington Alternative School was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds and in February, a Red Bank High student was arrested and charged after bringing a gun to school.

Also in February, a 12-year-old Dalewood Middle School student was found in possession of a weapon after being taken into custody by Chattanooga Police taken for an outstanding warrant for a burglary.
