Remembering Sept. 11: Chattanooga area events and specials pay tribute

This year marks 18 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000.

Chattanooga area residents are planning events Wednesday to pay tribute to the fallen in observance of Patriot Day.

PROGRAMS

Tennessee

  • From 6 a.m. until 5 p.m., the American flag, carried by members of the UTC family, will continuously circle Chamberlain Field at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to honor the resilience of the nation and honor the fallen. The public is invited to participate.
  • The Scenic City Women's Network will host a prayer walk at 10:30 a.m. Participants are asked to gather on the Sixth Street side of the Hamilton County Courthouse. Then at 12 p.m., there will be a Patriot Day program on the courthouse steps, 625 Georgia Ave.
  • The Athens Fire Department will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 8:46 a.m. at the City Municipal Building, 815 North Jackson St.

Georgia

  • Walker County will hold a Patriot Day service at 8:15 a.m. on the steps of the county courthouse, 103 S. Duke St. in LaFayette. The ceremony will include a bell-ringing at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. to signify the moments when two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center.

OFFERS

  • Mission BBQ: First responders will receive a free sandwich from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. at all locations. There will be a performance of the national anthem at 12 p.m. www.mission-bbq.com
