MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in Tennessee say an officer has been suspended after he was charged with crashing his car into a building while off duty.

Memphis police said Sgt. Thomas Berryhill was arrested Saturday afternoon on charges of DUI, public intoxication and reckless driving.

Police said Berryhill struck a curb and then a building column while pulling into a parking lot. Police said Berryhill failed to perform a field sobriety test as instructed.

Berryhill has been relieved of duty pending an investigation. He has been employed by the Memphis Police Department since 1993.

Berryhill's lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.
