Tennessee health care system to close 1 emergency room, expand another

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- A health care system in Tennessee is closing the emergency room at one medical center and expanding emergency services at a hospital.

A news release from West Tennessee Healthcare says the organization's board of trustees approved a resolution Tuesday evening to renovate and expand the emergency department at Milan General Hospital. The $5.5 million project is expected to be complete in 2021.

The organization will close the emergency room, outpatient lab and radiology services at Humboldt Medical Center. The release says emergency room visits in Humboldt have decreased in the last 5 years. The organization says most emergencies are transferred to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital or other larger facilities in the region. The emergency room in Humboldt is scheduled to close Oct. 25.
