BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A capital murder charge has been filed against a man in Alabama accused in the death of his girlfriend's toddler.

Sylvester Corderyl Taylor, 31, was booked Thursday in the Jefferson County Jail and was being held without bond, news outlets reported.

Kaiden Ford, 2, was pronounced dead Wednesday evening, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office said. Officers had been called to a home on a report of the child not breathing. The boy was treated on scene before being taken at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham, where he died.

The sheriff's office initially called the case a "suspicious" death, according to news outlets.

"After investigation it is clear that the child died as a result of injuries inflicted upon him by Taylor," Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff David Agee said.

The coroner's complete report was pending, Agee said.

Court records obtained by news outlets show Taylor was the boyfriend of Ford's mother. Documents also show Taylor served prison time after pleading guilty to reckless manslaughter in 2014. He was also convicted of first-degree robbery in 2008, AL.com reported.

It's unclear whether Taylor had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
