MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A police officer and a man accused of firing a gun outside a house were both shot in an exchange of gunfire in Georgia.

No one was outside when police arrived at the home Wednesday night in Cobb County after someone reported a man firing a gun, news outlets reported.

The officer went to the door of the home, and police said a man answered the door with a gun in his hand.

Authorities were still investigating what led up to the shootout, Cobb County Police Sgt. Wayne Delk told news outlets.

The officer was shot in the arm and the suspect was shot in the torso. Both were taken to hospitals. The officer was expected to survive and the suspect suffered a serious injury, news outlets reported.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked to handle the case. This is its 16th officer involved shooting case this year, WAGA-TV reported.
