A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer was injured after being shot during a car chase Thursday night on U.S. Highway 27 heading north toward Highway 153.
The incident happened around 8 p.m.
Troopers tried to stop a vehicle heading north from downtown Chattanooga when they began to exchange gunfire.
The suspect, Cody Seals, then crossed the median and left the roadway and crashed.
The troopers and Seals exited their vehicles and began to exchange gunfire again.
Trooper Khalat Ghazi was struck and Seals was also injured. The second trooper, Rich Thomas, was also involved, but it is not clear who injured Seals.
Both Ghazi and Seals were taken to a local hospital and are in stable condition.
The incident closed a portion of the highway from Signal Mountain Road to Highway 153 while the investigation was conducted.
Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation.
"We're extremely fortunate that those troopers are OK," said an emotional Chief Deputy Austin Garrett. "We're extremely blessed and fortunate that we didn't experience a loss of life and a trooper being killed here tonight."
This is a developing story.
