SMITHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee man who exchanged gunfire with police officers has died, authorities said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway were investigating Thursday night's shooting at a home in DeKalb County near Smithville, which is about 65 miles (105 kilometers) east of Nashville, The Tennessean reported.

Gregorio Cruz Vanloo, 28, threatened officers before drawing a handgun and firing at officers, who returned fire, DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray said. Vanloo was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Ray said. No officers were injured.

Authorities said they had been searching for Vanloo because he was a suspect in an earlier shots fired report and they received a tip he was at the home. He was on the front porch when he engaged with officers, the sheriff said.
