MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama inmate who escaped in October is back in custody.

Vernell Sanders, 52, had been on the run since his escape from the Red Eagle Correctional Work Facility, a minimum-security facility, where he had been serving time for robbery, assault and receiving stolen property. According to a news release from CrimeStoppers, Sanders was captured last week in Birmingham.

Sanders was caught after Birmingham Police stopped him while investigating a call of a suspicious person, the release said.

The warden at Red Eagle referred all calls to the Alabama Department of Corrections. The Alabama Department of Corrections did not immediately return a telephone call seeking further information on how he escaped or the length of his sentence.

ADOC said Red Eagle inmates are assigned to jobs at government agencies in the Montgomery area, The Montgomery Advertiser reported. The facility is designed to "provide suitable surroundings, work programs and staff to assist male inmates to reintegrate into society," the department said on its website.
