BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) -- A Tennessee woman charged in a wrong-way crash that killed a police officer had a blood alcohol content of twice the legal limit, authorities said.
Ashley Kroese, 24, of Thompson Station, is charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication in the death last week of Brentwood Police Officer Destin Legieza, 30. Investigators determined the officer died when Kroese's vehicle, traveling north in the southbound lane, struck his cruiser nearly head on.
During a bond hearing Monday, an officer testified that Kroese's blood alcohol content was .166. The legal limit in Tennessee is .08. The judge set her bond at $750,000 after hearing testimony and arguments from the prosecutor and defense attorney, news outlets reported.
Prosecutors argued that Kroese was a flight risk because she has citizenship in the U.S. and France, but her lawyer said she is not a flight risk.
"The issue is whether a million-dollar bond is appropriate or out of their reach. If you keep a million-dollar bond, you might as well convict her," attorney Lee Offman said.
