MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Police fatally shot a carjacking suspect after he shot an officer in the head during a chase north of Atlanta, authorities said.

Cobb County officers began chasing Martin Humberto Sanchez Fregoso, 37, on Thursday night after a driver reported he stole a car, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

The agency said Fregoso fired a rifle multiple times, striking a patrol vehicle during the chase.

The man later got out of his car and fired at officers again while running through a townhome community, according to Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk. Officers eventually encountered him behind a dumpster and ordered him to drop his weapon, authorities said.

Fregoso refused to drop the gun and later fired at an officer, striking him in the head, according to the state agency. Investigators said officers returned fire, striking and killing Fregoso.

The wounded officer was treated at a hospital and released, and was expected to fully recover, Delk said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the shooting.

None of the officers involved were immediately identified.
