NASHVILLE -- U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander revealed Friday that his daughter, who lives in New York, has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Tennessee Republican said in a radio interview on The Marc And Kim Show on Knoxville's 102.1 that his daughter and son-in-law reside in Westchester County, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"My daughter in New York lives in Westchester County where they've had all this trouble and she tested positive," Alexander said. "She was pretty sick and she's in her 40's. If you're 80, you ought to be really careful. Maybe you should in your 40's too."

Alexander, who is chairman of the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee, also said her daughter's husband "has been sick for a week, and her son tested negative. He's nine but wasn't sick, but he got sick yesterday.

"So they don't know whether it's that or something else," Alexander added. "You can take it one day and be okay and the next day you're sick."

New York state's COVID-19 outbreak is the most severe in the U.S.

Alexander in 2019 announced plans that he would not seek a fourth term in 2020. .
