Wet pursuit: Man flees Alabama police by driving into river

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) - A brief police chase came to a watery end on Sunday in northwest Alabama.

Florence Police Capt. Brad Holmes tells the TimesDaily that an officer tried to stop a man for driving recklessly in a park. Instead of pulling over, the man drove to the park's beach on the Tennessee River and drove into the river.

The man escaped from the SUV as it sank into the river up to the roof. Police officers and firefighters approached the man in a boat and took him aboard.

Holmes says the unnamed man was not arrested but was taken to a hospital.

No one else was in the SUV.
