JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee man accused of charging at sheriff's deputies with a knife died Monday after being both shot and stunned during the encounter, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a Jonesborough home around 11:30 p.m. after a caller reported that Gary P. Dorton, 44, was threatening to harm himself and a relative, according to a statement from the bureau.

Deputies arrived to find Dorton on the front porch of the home with a large knife that he refused to drop, the agency said.

Authorities said a deputy fired at and struck Dorton after he charged at law enforcement officers with the weapon, but Dorton continued to hold onto the knife and again refused commands to drop it.

Dorton later tried to cut himself with the weapon, prompting a deputy to use a stun gun on him, the statement said.

Dorton was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not immediately provide his cause of death.

The Bureau of Investigation said it was reviewing the case and would present its findings to the District Attorney General.

The deputies involved were not identified.
