Searchers recover body of missing Chickamauga Creek kayaker

State and local officials on Sunday recovered the body of a missing 26-year-old Rossville, Georgia, man whose overturned kayak and possessions were found in the Chickamauga Creek on Saturday, Oct. 24.

According to a news release from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Robert "DJ" Young's fiancee dropped him off around 9 a.m. Saturday at a kayak launch at Camp Jordan and later reported him missing after calls to him went straight to voicemail.

Fellow kayakers reported finding an overturned kayak around 11 a.m., 300 yards from the launch, and family members later identified the belongings found as Young's. The release states officials called off the initial search around 1 a.m. on Sunday, but were resumed later in the day.

Young's body was located a little before 1 p.m. and was taken to the Hamilton County medical examiner's office.

Water levels in the area were said to be ideal for search efforts as they were low, between knee deep and nine feet deep.
