Developer loses bid for more rentals

A planning panel Monday turned down a proposal by a Chattanooga developer to add more apartments to an new development after concerns were raised by neighbors.

"We're happy with the result," said Evelyn Wolff of Old Pineville Road.

Developer John Wise had sought approval to add two buildings holding 56 apartments to the 240 units which opened recently on nearby Pineville Road.

Wise said he took part in a neighborhood meeting, made a lot of changes to meet concerns, and that there was no plan to tie into Old Pineville Road from the expansion area.

"I'm creating a lot of tax dollars," he added.

Don Moon, a member of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission, said Wise planned to do a lot of severe cutting and filling to prepare the building site.

"The project you've got now is in an appropriate place. I'm not sure about this," Moon said about the addition. "I don't think it will help the neighborhood whatsoever."

City Councilwoman Deborah Scott said there already had been some stormwater issues in the neighborhood.

She said Wise had agreed to take steps to make the new apartments "less objectionable."

Teresa Sheridan of Old Pineville Road told the planning commission the new apartments would "destroy the neighborhood."

Wise said after the panel's vote that he wasn't sure what step he would next take.
