850-foot VW pedway taking shape

• Owner: Volkswagen of America

• Purpose: The pedestrian bridge will connect employee and visitor parking lots with the Volkswagen auto assembly plant.

• Size: The span stretches 850 feet over one of the roads adjacent to the plant.

• Features: The steel-and-glass bridge used ideas from architecture students at Auburn University who presented the winning entry in a VW-sponsored contest. The bridge is touted as one of the signature features of the $1 billion plant.

• Cost: $7.25 million. City and county governments agreed to pay for the bridge as part of an incentive package to lure Volkswagen to Chattanooga in 2008.

• Schedule: Completed later this spring.
