Wacker Polysilicon North America wants to fill about 60 more lead operator and supervisory posts in chemical and technical manufacturing areas for its Charleston, Tenn., plant.
"We are looking for people with a mechanical, technical or chemical background who also have leadership experience in a manufacturing environment," said Erika Burk, director of human resources for the Bradley County facility. "It is our goal to make 60 job offers by the holidays."
She said plans are to begin interviews for the jobs in November.
Those hired will train for six months in Chattanooga at the Wacker Institute at Chattanooga State Community College, earning between $15 and $21 per hour, according to the company. New hires then will travel to Wacker's polysilicon plant in Burghausen, Germany, to train alongside their counterparts there.
The company already has hired the initial 70 lead operators, and they're training at the institute.
Wacker plans eventually to hire from 650 to 700 people. The $1.5 billion plant will make polysilicon for use in the solar industry.
Amanda Plecas, the company's site communications manager, said Wacker has hired about 120 workers so far, and most of them are local.
"Our new hires will be part of a team working at a state-of-the-art company in the green industry of renewable energy. These positions offer lots of opportunity for upward mobility, as well," Burk said.
