Small Biz: Chatta-cakes Bakery whipping up custom sweets

photo Shannon Anderson closes the cover on her main display case Monday at Chattacakes on Hixson Pike. Anderson opened her shop Dec. 14.

• Name: Chatta-cakes Bakery

• Owner: Shannon Anderson

• Location: 3904 Hixson Pike in Chattanooga

• Opened: Dec. 14, 2013

• Service: Chatta-cakes is a bakery, but with a twist. It provides all the services typical of bakeries: baking and serving up decorated cakes, cookies, cheesecakes, other baked goods and custom orders. Chatta-cakes also features "paint-a-cake," where customers get to paint and decorate their own cake, popular for birthday parties, all done in-store.

• Staff: Husband and wife duo, Shannon and Mike Anderson

• How it got started: Shannon Anderson formerly baked out of her home and sold goods at Hixson Market. The market allowed Anderson to get exposure, and her positive experience led to her consider going into baking full-time. So "we decided to take the plunge," and open Chatta-cakes at the end of last year, she said.

• Five-year goal: Anderson does not intend to open a second location, but she is hopeful that the Hixson Pike location will grow enough to allow for the hire of one or two additional employees in the next five years.

• Why Chattanooga: Anderson is a Chattanooga native, born and raised in the city.

• What is unique? Chatta-cakes bakes seasonal goods, often implementing seasonal ingredients and recipes. Chatta-cakes also is in favor of recipe sharing. Anderson is happy to hear others' recipes and if an item makes the menu cut, it takes on the name of the individual who created it and/or shared it with Chatta-cakes.
