Clyde's Tavern to open on Main Street: Converting auto glass shop into a restaurant

photo Construction and remodeling are underway on the former Clyde's Auto Glass building on West Main Street. The building will be the site of a new restaurant and bar.

A new neighborhood tavern is coming to the Southside.

Veteran restaurateur Mike Monen will revamp the old Clyde's Auto Glass at 122 W. Main Street and turn the shuttered auto business into a restaurant called Clyde's.

While many of the details are still undecided, Monen hopes to have the restaurant open by August. A building permit for the site includes $500,000 in renovations, including a covered patio and service area with walk-in coolers.

The tavern will be Monen's fifth restaurant in Chattanooga. He and his wife already own Community Pie, Milk and Honey, Taco Mamacita and Urban Stack, as well as two more restaurants not in Chattanooga.

The tavern will be the latest in a string of new projects on the Southside.

Just two blocks away at the corner of Main and Market, work is underway on a new 4-story, $7 million apartment building. Virginia developers have promised to build 102 apartments a bit farther down the road at Madison and Main, and Southern Surgical Arts is putting the final touches on their new headquarters at 1405 Cowart Street. Next door to that, a new Uncle Bob's Self Storage just opened.

Yet despite the new projects slated for the Southside and the area's general renaissance, several buildings still sit empty on Main Street.

Clyde's Auto Glass will not be one of them.
