After six months of falling prices, the cost of gasoline appears to have bottomed out and headed up again.

The average retail price of gas in Chattanooga rose 6.1 cents per gallon in the past year - the biggest weekly jump in prices in more than a year and a half.

GasBuddy's daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga showed the average price of gasoline Sunday was still below $2 a gallon in Chattanooga - but just barely. GasBuddy said the average for regular gas in Chattanooga on Sunday was $1.99 per gallon. Despite the weekly increase from $1.93 per gallon a week earlier, average Chattanooga gas prices are still nearly $1.05 per gallon less than a year ago.

Nationwide, gas prices rose an average of 12.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.17 per gallon, GasBuddy.com said.

"This past week gasoline prices saw the largest weekly incline since July, 2013," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy."While the pace of increases will slow in the week ahead, we're looking at continued gas price increases over the next few weeks. Oil prices have risen, contributing to the higher prices, but also worrisome are the refinery strikes initiated over the last week that have oil companies scrambling to keep refineries online."

While gasoline prices have rebounded, diesel consumers who have not enjoyed the dramatic drop in fuel prices since June should continue to see lower prices in coming weeks, DeHaan predicts.

The cheapest gas in Chattanooga today is $1.92 per gallon being sold at Delta Express and Murphy USA on Brainerd Road and at HiTech stations on Highway 58 and Brainerd Road, according to GasBuddy.com
