After six months of falling prices, the cost of gasoline appears to have bottomed out and headed up again.

The average retail price of gas in Chattanooga rose 6.1 cents per gallon in the past week -- the biggest weekly jump in prices in more than a year and a half.

GasBuddy's daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga showed the average price of gasoline this week was still below $2 a gallon in Chattanooga -- but just barely. GasBuddy said the average for regular gas in Chattanooga on Sunday was $1.99 per gallon.

Despite the weekly increase from $1.93 per gallon a week earlier, average Chattanooga gas prices are still nearly $1.05 per gallon less than a year ago and 18 cents per gallon less than the U.S. average.

Nationwide, gas prices rose an average of 12.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.17 per gallon, GasBuddy.com said.

"This past week gasoline prices saw the largest weekly incline since July, 2013," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy. "While the pace of increases will slow in the week ahead, we're looking at continued gas price increases over the next few weeks."
